The Nation’s Founders understood that Education and Religion would form the Cornerstones of the Country’s Progress. This Guiding Philosophy served as the impetus for Dr. William R. Tolbert Jr.’s proposal to build a Baptist University in 1964 and was repeated in 1980.
Faith: Stand on belief in God. Through Faith, spiritual understanding is developed. Through faith, we are elevated beyond mental ability and emotional substance to realm of impossibility, where all things are possible. At BU improbabilities are non-existent.
Godliness: The simple idea of transforming Christian values into daily living and one’s active personal lifestyle.
Academic Freedom: BU encourages honest expression, which enables intellectual growth among students, faculty, and staff. Academic Freedom develops in an environment that is committed to excellence in learning.
Creativity & Innovation: WRTBU promotes the holistic, well-rounded development of its faculty, staff and students. Creativity, when applied to the whole individual needs and nurtured in an academic environment, develops unparalleled mindsets in individuals’ innovation and communities’ development.
Prudence: BU believes in and encourages a personal well-being that is born of good judgment, tied to, sensibility, cautious action and sensitivity. Prudence is grounded on these principles thereby giving rise to wisdom.
The declaration of our values is meant to help students, staff, faculty, and administrators become more cognizant of their rights and responsibilities as members of the University community.
The values stated here are already indigenous to the Liberia Baptist Thinking, Philosophy and Theology, although many have not been published in written form. These values are so culturally fundamental that most have been assumed or simply inferred in various national statements and/or policies.

This then, is the mission of WRTBU to intentionally prepare men and women of integrity and character, especially Baptist Men and Women; because we know they will be at the high-table and there where decisions are made, a great difference would be expected.
